Abstract

Reports of problem behaviour in children with Down's syndrome and their siblings were gathered from mothers, fathers and teachers. Twenty-one sibling pairs were included in the study. The Revised Behavior Problem Checklist (Quay & Peterson, 1983) was used to gather information on total problem behaviour and on five specific problem areas. Children with Down's syndrome were reported to display more problem behaviours overall and to show significantly more attentional problems than their siblings by all rater groups. Sisters of children with Down's syndrome were reported to be more conduct disordered than were brothers by mothers, fathers and teachers. Measures of depression and marital satisfaction found both parent groups to be in the non-distressed range on these instruments. Depression contributed significantly to both parents' reports of problems in the siblings while marital satisfaction was important for mothers' reports of problems in children with Down's syndrome.

Sono state raccolte le testimonianze di madri, padri e insegnanti sul comportamento problematico nei bambini con sindrome di Down e nei loro fratelli. Lo studio è stato condotto su ventuno coppie di fratelli. Per raccogliere informazioni sul comportamento problematico generale e su quello di cinque aree specifiche si è fatto ricorso alla Lista di Controllo sul Problema Comportamentale (Quay & Peterson, 1983). Dai racconti è emerso che in ogni gruppo i bambini con SD mostrano comportamenti più problematici in generale e maggiori problemi di attenzione rispetto ai loro fratelli. Madri, padri e insegnanti hanno descritto il comportamento delle sorelle di bambini con SD come più disordinato. Le misurazioni dei livelli di depressione e di armonia coniugale hanno evidenziato che nessuno dei due genitori era in uno stato di affaticamento. La depressione ha contribuito significativamente alle testimonianze di entrambi i genitori sui problemi nei fratelli mentre l'armonia coniugale è stata importante per le testimonianze delle madri sui problemi nei bambini con SD.
