Retarded children and their siblings.

Abstract

One hundred and eighty-three retarded children and their nearest-in-age siblings were investigated. Ninety-five of the retarded children had Down's syndrome and 88 were retarded for other reasons. Interviews with the parents were carried out at home. Questionnaires on behaviour and educational attainment were completed for the retarded child, the sibling and a classroom control for the sibling. The retarded children had more behaviour problems than their siblings, as expected. The behaviour problems in the sibling were more often found if the retarded child had much-disturbed behaviour, especially when the retarded child had Down's syndrome. The siblings in the non-Down's group had more reading problems and more behaviour disturbance in school than either the controls or the siblings of Down's syndrome group.

Sono stati esaminati centottantatré bambini con ritardo mentale e i loro fratelli più vicini alla loro età. Dei bambini con ritardo, novantacinque avevano la sindrome di Down e 88 un ritardo di origine diversa. I genitori sono stati intervistati a casa loro. Sono stati compilati dei questionari sul comportamento e sull’apprendimento del bambino con ritardo, del fratello e di un gruppo di controllo per il fratello. Come ci si poteva attendere, i bambini con ritardo avevano più problemi comportamentali dei loro fratelli. Si trovavano più problemi comportamentali nel fratello se il bambino con ritardo aveva un comportamento molto disturbato, specialmente quando il ritardo era dovuto alla SD. I fratelli del gruppo senza SD avevano più problemi di lettura e più disturbi comportamentali a scuola rispetto ai fratelli del gruppo di controllo o ai fratelli del gruppo con SD.
